Warm welcome to all our new Couch to 5K runners

Thursday 8 January 2026

The start of the year has brought a fantastic wave of new Couch to 5K groups across jogscotland and we are delighted to welcome so many people taking their first steps into running.

Many new members join us with a shared motivation — to feel happier, healthier, and more confident.

Starting something new can feel daunting, especially when running feels difficult or tiring in those early weeks. That’s where jogscotland’s trained leaders make all the difference, offering guidance, reassurance, and encouragement from the very first session.

Our Couch to 5K beginner groups follow structured, progressive programmes designed to build fitness gradually and safely. Just as importantly, they provide support at every step of the journey.

While the physical benefits are clear, what many people gain most is the sense of community — friendships, laughter, and knowing you’re not doing it alone.

We know that trying something new can bring nerves and anxiety, but joining a jogscotland group offers far more than a running plan. It’s a chance to connect with others, feel supported, and celebrate every small win along the way.

Jo Skead, jogscotland Programme Manager, says:

January is our busiest time of year for groups running their first Couch to 5K programmes and it really is wonderful to see so many people ready to give it a go.

‘The hardest part is putting on your shoes and stepping out of the door. If you can do that on a cold, dark night, then you’re already winning!

‘I’m certain the support you will get from our amazing, trained leaders will give you the confidence and boost to keep going.

‘Enjoy the journey.’

Whether you’re taking your very first run or returning after a break, we’re proud to see so many people beginning their jogging journey with jogscotland.
